Michael, Franklin and Trevor bring different ambitions into a shared criminal partnership. The surrounding city and Blaine County leave room for driving and exploration between missions, while GTA Online offers a separate character and progression.
The story moves through three perspectives. Story Mode links the three leads' personal situations with their joint plans. Following different characters gives the same world several points of view and changes the context of the next mission, rather than asking you to build one custom protagonist.
Roads and open spaces give the city another pace. Los Santos and Blaine County form an open world you can travel around between story assignments. Driving and side activities create room to step away from the main plot before returning to its larger set-pieces.
GTA Online develops your own character with other players. The online world has its own missions, businesses and criminal-career progression. It is distinct from Michael, Franklin and Trevor's story, and its connected activities require the online access associated with your console version.
